{"id":11310,"date":"2025-04-29T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bianna.com\/actualidad\/spain-facing-the-challenges-of-european-recycling\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T13:41:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T12:41:20","slug":"spain-facing-the-challenges-of-european-recycling","status":"publish","type":"actualidad","link":"https:\/\/bianna.com\/en\/news\/spain-facing-the-challenges-of-european-recycling\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain facing the challenges of European recycling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"intro\">The European Union is moving steadily towards a more sustainable future. <strong>Among the goals set out in its ambitious 2030 Agenda, one stands out in particular: by 2035, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/reaching-2030s-residual-municipal-waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">less than 10% of the municipal waste generated should end up in landfill<\/a><\/strong>. This commitment not only aims to improve recycling rates, but to radically transform the way we think about waste management across the continent. <\/p>\n\n<p>If we look at the European landscape, we find countries that are already very close to meeting these targets. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/reaching-2030s-residual-municipal-waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Member States such as Germany, the Netherlands or Austria have, for decades, opted for a combination of prevention, advanced recycling and energy recovery of non-recyclable waste, achieving landfill rates well below 10%.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n<p>European experience shows that achieving these objectives is possible, but it requires <strong>political will, technological innovation and a profound change in waste management.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Calderas_biomasa-1.jpg\" alt=\"Recycling challenges\" class=\"wp-image-9749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Calderas_biomasa-1.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Calderas_biomasa-1-480x168.jpg 480w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Calderas_biomasa-1-720x252.jpg 720w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Calderas_biomasa-1-960x336.jpg 960w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Calderas_biomasa-1-1250x438.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In this context, Spain still has ground to cover. Currently,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ine.es\/jaxi\/Datos.htm?tpx=33000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> close to 45% of municipal waste in our country ends up in landfill, a figure far from the European targets<\/strong><\/a>. The challenge is significant and cannot be solved simply by increasing recycling rates: it is also essential to make progress in prevention, in more efficient separate collection, and to open the debate on a solution that is still pending in many areas of Spain: energy recovery.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recycling and Recovery: the perfect pair<\/h2>\n\n<p>There are currently different technologies with TRL levels that more than adequately ensure their maturity, in the mechanical, biological and recovery areas.<\/p>\n\n<p>This ensures a very comfortable position when designing a global management strategy for any type of waste.<\/p>\n\n<p>Should the solution be purely mechanical? Should the solution be purely energy-based? <br\/>As with any decision, the best position lies in the right balance between distant opposites.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is the path: we must be able to analyse the reality of the material (composition, fluctuation over an annual period, quantity generated, management capacity). The reality of the environment (raw material needs, energy resources, space resources). <\/p>\n\n<p>And with that, prepare the strategy, but always with the long term in mind. This is the case of the Zubieta (Gipuzkoa) energy recovery plant, which represents a successful example. Despite initial opposition, it is now widely accepted by the community and has made it possible to close landfills and reduce the region\u2019s environmental footprint. That said, these are complex projects that require political and social consensus, often over several legislative terms.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zubieta.jpg\" alt=\"Recycling challenges\" class=\"wp-image-9753\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zubieta.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zubieta-480x168.jpg 480w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zubieta-720x252.jpg 720w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zubieta-960x336.jpg 960w, https:\/\/bianna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zubieta-1250x438.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy microgrids: a solution to two problems\u2014waste management and energy security<\/h2>\n\n<p>In line with these challenges, on 20 March <strong>the Future4Circularity event took place; an event that brings together the most influential figures and leading organisations in the waste management and circular economy sector in Spain.<\/strong> The purpose of the meeting is to redefine how we manage available resources and close production cycles efficiently.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Bianna<\/strong> participated in the event, where our CCO, <strong>Alberto Hern\u00e1ndez Minguito<\/strong>, presented a key idea: <strong>decentralized energy recovery can be an essential part of the solution<\/strong>.
